Manufacturer Stellantis has laid off 1,100 workers, and the layoffs could impact its U.S. workforce of 52,000. The company is also under pressure to cut inventory in the U.S. and revive sales and margins. Stellantis’s sales and market share have been declining, and the company ended 2023 with sales losses that were higher than competitors. Stellantis has a glut of unsold cars and as of December 2023, Stellantis’s total debt was $32.57 billion.
Stellantis is also involved in a dispute with the United Auto Workers (UAW) union:
- The UAW claims that Stellantis didn’t keep its commitments to reopen the Belvidere plant, which was idled in 2023.
- Stellantis rejects the UAW’s proposal to restore the Jobs Bank concept.
- Stellantis has filed lawsuits against the UAW and 23 local units.
- The UAW members at a Denver parts center voted to authorize a strike.
