Anti-Immigrant Mob Marches in Alexandra — But the Wrong People Are Being Blamed

In every war, the truth is the first casualty. Foreigners in South Africa are not the architects of poverty, hunger, or unemployment. Turning genuine grievance into hatred against the vulnerable is a grave injustice.

Yesterday, on 13 June 2026, an anti-immigrant mob marched through Alexandra, Johannesburg, voicing anger against immigrants and targeting Somalian- and Pakistani-owned shops — the very shops that feed them daily. In every war, the truth is the first casualty. Foreigners in South Africa are not to blame for the poverty, hunger, and unemployment that South Africans have suffered for many years.

South Africans have a genuine cause — but they are turning it against the wrong people.

How can a small number of foreigners cause mass unemployment? The roots of South Africa’s unemployment crisis run deep — they are structural, historical, and political. Poverty, desperation, and joblessness did not arrive with immigrants. Blaming the vulnerable for these entrenched failures is not only factually wrong; it is morally indefensible.

To turn genuine suffering into war, violence, looting, hatred, and burning anger against people who themselves came here with nothing — that is wrong. Massive unemployment in South Africa was not caused by the presence of foreign nationals.

Urgent Warning

Today it is war against foreign nationals. Tomorrow it will be inter-tribal war. After that, it will be turned against minorities — the Boers, the Whites, the next convenient scapegoat. This is how mob politics destroys nations from within.

Pakistanis and Somalians are renting shops that South Africans built — so why did South Africans not use those shops in the first place? Salon owners are renting spaces that South Africans constructed — why were those spaces left vacant? Foreign nationals who were selling vegetables on the streets have now been removed, and those tables stand empty. No South African has taken their place. The problem was never the foreigner.

The South African government must act urgently to curb this dangerous propaganda on social media. These platforms are being used to organise mobs, inflame hatred, and spread misinformation that costs lives. Silence from the government on this matter is complicity.

The Path Forward

Fix the economy. Start companies. Create jobs. Be tough on crime. Bring back international investors.

Do not threaten to seize banks and farms — that drives away the very investors and job creators South Africa desperately needs. As long as investors face the threat of crime and land expropriation, they will not come. And their brothers and sisters from overseas will not come to invest either.

Document the undocumented. Process immigration properly and legally. Do not use human beings as political props to win votes.

At least during yesterday’s march in Alexandra, there were no reports of looting or murder of foreigners — and for that, we can be thankful. But the hatred that marched through those streets still leaves wounds. It emboldens those who would do worse next time.

Migrants in South Africa cannot truly be called foreigners. Different tribes and races came to Southern Africa centuries ago — without passports, without documents — just as people move today. The Zulu, Sotho, Xhosa, and others all migrated across this land long before modern borders were drawn. Now, some want to kill their brothers because they arrived more recently? History does not give any one group an exclusive claim to belong here.

Don’t blame the vulnerable. Fix your economy. Be harsh on crime. Create conditions where every investor — local and foreign — wants to build here.

South African marchers who direct their anger at powerless neighbours are misdirecting a righteous cause. The anger belongs at the feet of poor governance, systemic corruption, the collapse of state services, and decades of economic mismanagement. Channel that anger correctly, and it becomes a force for transformation. Pointed at the wrong people, it becomes a force for destruction.

Document the undocumented immigrants — not to use them as political weapons during election season, but because order and dignity demand it. Every person on this soil deserves to be seen, registered, and treated with humanity. That is not weakness. That is civilisation.
