Sweden does not “get rid of” its citizens in a literal or forceful sense. However, the government has recently implemented and proposed several measures to encourage Voluntary Repatriation for non-integrated residents and to tighten Citizenship and Residency Rules.
Recent policies aimed at reducing the population of non-integrated or criminal foreign-born individuals include:
Increased Repatriation Grants: Effective January 1, 2026, Sweden significantly increased the financial grant offered to immigrants with residence permits who choose to voluntarily move back to their home countries.
Proposed Revocation of Citizenship: The government has proposed changing the constitution to allow stripping Dual Citizens of their Swedish citizenship if they are convicted of “crimes that seriously harm Sweden’s vital interests,” such as terrorism or serious gang-related offenses.
Stricter Naturalization Requirements: As of June 2026, the residency requirement for obtaining citizenship is expected to increase from five to eight years. New applicants must also pass Swedish Language and Civics Tests and demonstrate financial self-sufficiency.
Revocation of Permanent Residency: New proposals suggest that up to 180,000 people could have their Permanent Residency Permits revoked, requiring them to either apply for citizenship (under stricter rules), switch to temporary permits, or face deportation if they do not qualify.
Combating the “Shadow Society”: Sweden is intensifying internal immigration controls and Forced Returns for individuals with expulsion orders to reduce the number of people living in the country illegally.
