In the lush hills of Nyanga, Zimbabwe, a thriving agricultural project is making waves in the global market. Local farmers, supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Zimbabwean government, have successfully produced 180 tons of chillies for export to the United States. This impressive achievement is a testament to the region’s fertile land and the determination of its farmers.

At the heart of this success story is the Nyakomba irrigation scheme, which has transformed the lives of local farmers. Gogo Christine Gwesere, a 62-year-old beneficiary, has gained financial independence through chilli production. “I’m proud and happy to be earning a steady income from chilli farming,” she said in a recent interview. The financial boost has significantly improved Gogo’s quality of life, allowing her to invest in her future.

According to a report by The Herald Newspaper, the farmers under the Nyakomba scheme exported 440 tonnes of chilli peppers to the US in 2024, earning over US$270 000. This remarkable achievement has inspired other farmers to follow suit. Mr. Didmus Dodzo, another beneficiary, has invested in a truck and expects to earn $4000 in June selling chillies and vegetables at Mbare Musika.

This success story highlights the potential of Zimbabwean farmers to excel in agriculture. With the right support, including government and donor funding, local farmers can tap into foreign markets and unlock their full potential. However, many farmers still face significant challenges, including limited access to funding and markets.
