Canada’s Liberal Party Considers Decriminalization of All Illicit Drugs

(From The Guardian)

With months left before Canada becomes the first country in the G7 to fully legalise marijuana, members of the country’s Liberal party, led federally by Justin Trudeau, are calling on their government to go one step further and decriminalise the possession and consumption of all illicit drugs.

The internal push to embrace the idea is one of more than two dozen resolutions set to be debated this week as the political party gathers for their national convention in the east coast city of Halifax. The resolution is one of three put forward by the national caucus, suggesting widespread support among Liberal MPs.

“It’s one of the few issues where we’re taught from a young age, that drugs are bad and that it’s normal to throw people in jail for using drugs,” said Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, a Liberal MP who has championed decriminalisation since he was elected in 2015.

“Yet when you actually start looking underneath those claims and at the actual evidence and hear from people who have study or lived this issue, this isn’t the right approach.”

Nations of the world aren’t looking at the drug problems pragmatically.

      1) If people want to take drugs, they will.
      2) The reason street drugs are so costly is because they are illegal, the cost in making them is insignificant compared to the cost of smuggling them.
      3) Drug abuse is a medical problem, and should be treated as such instead of as a legal problem.

Perhaps the real solution would be to decriminalize them. I don’t care if the guy up the street eats himself to death ( which , interestingly, people do. They eat until they are fat as hogs then go to doctors to get drugs that counteract the effects of gluttony).
Why should I care if he wants to take shit into his body that is self destructive? As long as, and until , he commits a crime because of them, I would just as soon big nanny government leave him be. If he wants to take the risk of health damage do to his indulgence, so what?

If all these drugs were decriminalized, we would save gazillions on policing and imprisoning the users. The streets would clean themselves up because those who wish to over-indulge to death would be free to do so. Whether it be death by beer, unlimited pork chops, or meth.

Insurance rates for home owners would likely go down, because the cost of these drugs would become so cheap that the users wouldn’t need to bust into my home and take my electronics and tools to hock to get their next fix in order to stop withdrawals.

Drug dealers and all the insane crime associated with smuggling and dealing the drugs would dry up, because the profit margin ( which is insane, and could tempt anyone out of work and hard up) would fall into the basement.

The only cost we would be left with is the cost of medical care for them to either dry them out or bury them, which is no doubt far less than housing them in prisons, hunting them down with already over- burdened police departments, and fighting a “war on drugs”.

I remember years ago one country ( I think it was the Netherlands or Sweden) started supplying all heroin addicts with heroin. The result was that the heroin addicts were getting pure pharmecuetical drugs, not poisonous shit cut with God knows what in someones garage, and were not sick all the time and could work full time jobs and be part of society. It was costing the government a few bucks a week for the heroin plus the cost of needles and dispensary operations.
It is my understanding that what makes heroin addicts ill is not the heroin itself, and that someone can be addicted to pharmaceutical heroin and remain socially functional for their entire lives, because it is not the heroin itself that ruins their health, it is the shit it is cut with.

Consider the cost of having clinics that councel those with drug problems, providing addicts pure drugs until they decide they are sick of being owned by dope, and keeping track of addicts who are no longer hiding in the shadows as compared to the cost of replacing your TV when an addict tears your back door up to take it, the cost of housing them in prison , the cost of the police fighting a constant battle against them, and the drug war, and the human cost of deaths due to drug cartels and rival dealers at war with each other as well as all the associated crime.

I think the idea of just making all the shit legal and helping the problem solve itself has some potential merit.
