Panic in the United States. A meteorite crashed near Detroit, causing a 2.0 magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale.
The United States Geological Prospecting Service (USGS) has confirmed the fall of a meteorite on the outskirts of Detroit (Michigan), which triggered a 2.0 magnitude earthquake on Richter, according to agerpres on Wednesday.
The earthquake was recorded at 20:09 local time (01:09 GMT GMT).
The “approximate” location of the meteorite’s fall is 8 kilometers west-southwest of New Haven, a town of approximately 4,600 inhabitants on the outskirts of Detroit, near Lake St. Clair and the border with Canada.
Before the USGS confirmed the fall of the meteorite, dozens of people posted on the social networking records of the phenomenon where a light beam followed by an apparent explosion could be seen.
Following these records, the National Weather Service (NWS) said the bright light and explosion did not correspond to lightning or thunder, saying it might be a meteorite.
In the video clip published by the American Meteor Society, the estimated trajectory is presented, experts suggesting it was visible in Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, New York, Ontario, Kentucky Iowa and Minnesota.
NASA officials confirmed its meteor camera spotted the event at about 8:08 p.m. at Oberlin College in Ohio. The image shows a tiny white ball traversing the screen until a bright flash is seen when it appears to make an impact.
