Where is God?

Where is God?

Love one another!

I find myself doubting in the early Easter morning,

while I’m listening to the news of wars on the radio,

in my ear I hear the radiant scripture imploring us to

love one another, yes, even your most distant brother.

Those whose plight is witnessed from afar,

the dreadful agony of those who needlessly suffer.

Witnessing the reports of intense bombings and killings

with threats from tyrants to wipe out whole civilisations.

An anger in depth between quarrelling, warring nations,

tears fall from disbelieving eyes on these terrible occasions.

Children are dying, wounded, scarred, permanently scared,

the consequence of warfare.

Where the cry from the innocent people is “This is so unfair!”

So where is God? Silent, absent, indifferent or gone?

God is three and God is one, God is Father, Spirit and God is Son.

Where is God when illness visits, when death comes knocking at unexpecting hearts, when bills mount up, when fears increase.

Where is God in the rubble of broken limbs of shattered lives? Where is God when violence will not cease?

Peace is a dream wished for by so many, granted to so few.

Where is God the Prince of Peace? When will that ceasefire come into view?

Yet often unseen, God is wrapped in the blankets of acts of mercy, seeped in the sweat of human kindness, poured out in support of each other, in loving compassion.

Tending to the wounds indifference and hatred inflict, easing suffering and calming the tension.

God is revealed in the crackling laughter of children playing, floating upon the air of acts of justice, of deeds of kindness, of bravery, of noble finery.

God inspires the persistence of human creativity and endeavour, where hope caresses the veil between despair and security, restoring our vitality.

God tends to the wounds where such crushing weariness clouds our vision, as we steady our faltering footsteps, when we reach out a hand of friendship and insist upon love, the human spirit implores a solution for peace it so anxiously yearns.

There God is present in abundance, though at times obscured and hidden by proud hearts and stubborn defiance, by self-interested defences, yet in the stillness a tingling sense, a determination returns.

Where is God, the cry of the fallen, he is Risen and Living, only a heartbeat away.

Never far from contrite spirits, searching constantly for the lost, the abandoned, looking out for those who stray.

God is here, in tenderness waiting, longing for each prodigal to return

Yearning patiently for humankind to wake from the slumber of shrugged shoulders, to lift their heads upward, to sink upon penitent knees, to finally learn.

Love one another!

Insist upon it, love everyone, no matter the creed, the colour, the nation; God is there when we are resolved in all humility to love each one as sister and brother.
