The Priesthood According to the King James Bible (KJV) – This Will Surprise MANY, Especially Women!!

Many churches and religious organizations have differing beliefs about what it means to “hold the priesthood.” Some claim exclusive authority through a line of men. Others teach that the priesthood was lost for centuries and needed to be restored. But what does the King James Version of the Bible actually say?

The truth is both profound and freeing: the priesthood of God was never lost — it was fulfilled and completed in Jesus Christ. And now, every believer—man and woman—is made part of a royal priesthood with direct access to God.

1. Jesus Christ: Our Eternal High Priest

The Old Testament priesthood was temporary, filled by fallible men who had to continually offer sacrifices. But everything changed with Jesus.

“But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood.”
— Hebrews 7:24, KJV

“For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities… Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace.”
— Hebrews 4:15–16, KJV

Jesus is our final and perfect High Priest. His priesthood is unchangeable, meaning it does not pass from man to man. It remains with Him forever. Through Him, the entire system of temple priests and animal sacrifices was fulfilled once and for all.

2. Did Jesus Give Priesthood Power to the Apostles?

Yes—Jesus gave His apostles spiritual authority and power, but not a priesthood title or office. He gave them the ability to preach, heal, and cast out devils—not through any institutional priesthood—but through the power of God.

“Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.”
— Luke 9:1, KJV

“Behold, I give unto you power… over all the power of the enemy.”
— Luke 10:19, KJV

Nowhere in Scripture did Jesus or His apostles teach that this authority required a special priesthood ordination. In fact, the New Testament never refers to the apostles as “priests.” Their power came from the Holy Spirit, not from an office.

“Our sufficiency is of God; Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament…”
— 2 Corinthians 3:5–6, KJV

And most importantly, the Bible says Jesus alone holds the eternal priesthood:

“He ever liveth to make intercession for them.”
— Hebrews 7:25, KJV

His priesthood is unchangeable — it is not transferred or inherited by men.

3. All Believers Are Now Priests

When Jesus died on the cross, the veil in the temple was torn from top to bottom (Matthew 27:51). This dramatic event symbolized that the way to God was now open to all through Jesus Christ. No more earthly priesthood was needed to stand between man and God.

“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation…”

“And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.”
— Revelation 5:10, KJV

This is one of the most liberating truths in Scripture: every born-again believer is a priest before God. This includes both men and women, young and old, regardless of background.

4. The Duties of Today’s Priests

Unlike the Old Covenant priests, believers today don’t offer animal sacrifices or wear robes in a temple. Instead, our priesthood is spiritual in nature.

We offer:

• Sacrifices of praise (Hebrews 13:15)
• Prayers and intercession (1 Timothy 2:1–2)
• Good works and service (Hebrews 13:16)
• The gospel of reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:18–20)

5. What About Giving Priesthood Blessings?

In some religious traditions, priesthood blessings are seen as special acts—like healing the sick or giving spiritual counsel—performed only by a select group of men. But the King James Bible teaches that all believers have access to God’s power through prayer and faith, not through a title or office. Jesus said plainly:

“These signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils… they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.”
— Mark 16:17–18, KJV

Notice, it doesn’t say “those ordained to the priesthood”—it says “them that believe.” Healing, encouragement, and spiritual strength come through faith in Jesus Christ, not through institutional authority. Any born-again believer, man or woman, can pray over the sick, comfort the brokenhearted, and be used by God to bless others through the Holy Spirit. This is the beauty of the New Covenant: the power flows through faith, not position.

6. False Teachings About Priesthood

Some modern religions teach that only certain men can hold the priesthood — often through claimed restoration or church hierarchy. But this contradicts Scripture.

“There is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”
— 1 Timothy 2:5, KJV

There is no earthly organization or religious title that gives someone greater spiritual access to God. That privilege is granted through faith in Jesus Christ alone.

In Summary

• Jesus Christ holds the only eternal priesthood.
• He gave His apostles spiritual authority, not a separate priesthood office.
• All believers are part of a royal priesthood through Him.
• The duties of New Covenant priests are spiritual, not ceremonial.
• Every believer can pray, minister, and bless others in Jesus’ name.
• No man or institution has exclusive claim to the priesthood today.

If you are in Christ, then you are already a priest — with full access to God’s throne of grace, power in prayer, and a calling to share the gospel with the world.
