Bible Story of the Day

The entire Bible is a revelation about Jesus Christ. From beginning to end, Jesus can be found in the text within. Seeing Jesus in scripture is a major step into understanding who our God is, and how He impacts and affects our lives in every moment. My desire through this Bible story of the day project is to show you the reference to Jesus in the Old Testament, and how the story can impact your life. My references will be posted at the bottom along with links that can help you dive deeper into the story than what I have done here. Open your heart and mind and be willing to accept scripture for what it says. If you don’t understand a story or verse or how it applies to your life, then pray to God for clarity and understanding. I pray this helps and affects your life and you have a better understanding of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Judges

Judges 3:9-11

⁹ When the sons of Israel cried to the Lord, the Lord raised up a deliverer for the sons of Israel to deliver them, Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother. ¹⁰The Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he judged Israel. When he went out to war, the Lord gave Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand, so that he prevailed over Cushan-rishathaim. ¹¹ Then the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died. (NASB).

Where is Jesus and what Does This Mean to Us?

Some of the most violent scenes of the Bible come from the Book of Judges. This was a very difficult time in for the Israelites. The Israelites possessed the promised land, but there were other Gentile nations living on the land as well, which heavily influenced how and what the Israelites worshiped. The period of Judges happened after King David had died. Israel was lost without a leader and fell into a period of false idol worship. God cast judgement on them for their ways by allowing the surrounding nations to fight, kill, plunder and more to the nation of Israel. The Israelites became repentant and pleaded to God for someone to deliver them from the hands of their enemies. This is when God gave Israel Judges. The first Judge was a man named Othniel. As you can read, through his leadership he gave Israel 40 years of peace. Israel became idol worshipers once again and God cast judgment upon them. This happened for over 400 years. There was a total of 12 Judges including one female Judge named Deborah.

Jesus is seen throughout the Book of Judges as represented by each Judge. The nation calls out for a savior. They plead to God to be rescued from their enemies. In this book the Judges are the saviors, but just as sacrificing a lamb for sins was only a temporary solution, so too were the judges. It wasn’t until Jesus came that the nation had a King once again that would save them from the enemy of death once and for all.

What does this mean to us? First, it shows that God hears our cries. Whatever it is that you need delivered from, God will hear you call to Him. If you are addicted to drugs and want freedom from this enemy that destroys your life, then you can call to God and He will deliver you. The Judges were not permanent, because the Israelites would continually go back to their old ways. They didn’t learn their lesson. If you go back to your old ways you will once again suffer at the hands of your enemies. God is not punishing you, as much as He is allowing your own freewill and choice to play out, which feels like punishment. The difference now and then is that we do not need a temporary solution, because we have a permanent one, Jesus.

Whatever crisis you are experiencing, whatever sin has you chained and imprisoned, whatever you have done in your past that is weighing you down can be removed by Jesus. Jesus died and rose for our sins to give us eternal life and to make us righteous. He has restored our ability to be right with God. You may have to face consequences of past actions such as jail or health issues, but your spirit can be saved, and your life radically changed even in the mess you find yourself. God loves you. He sent His Son for you. Whatever the problem is it is not too great for our God. Cry out to the Lord to be saved just as the Israelites did in the passage above. Believe in your heart that Jesus is who He says He is and profess with your mouth that He is your savior. Surrender your life to Him. Give Him everything. You will see changes in your life begin to happen. You didn’t get where you are overnight, and you may not be free from your chains overnight, but there is hope in the fight when you have Jesus.
