Auto Part Stores Are Closing Everywhere — Here’s Why (Video)

By mid-2025, Advance Auto Parts finalized shutting down 523 corporate stores and exiting 204 independent locations. The company shuttered four major West Coast distribution centers to consolidate its logistical footprint. Entire regions—particularly in Western states—lost their local stores as the brand focused strictly on highly dense, top-performing markets. The company offloaded its wholesale division, Worldpac, for $1.5 billion to streamline operations

Beyond corporate mismanagement, several structural headwinds are challenging brick-and-mortar auto part retailers. Online giants like Amazon and specialized platforms like RockAuto offer significantly wider catalogs. Consumers willingly trade instant local availability for lower online pricing. Warehouse retailers like Costco have captured highly profitable, high-turnover categories. Everyday drivers now buy wiper blades, filters, and car batteries during their grocery runs. Major automotive component manufacturers (such as First Brands) have faced bankruptcy. A double-digit percentage of domestic parts manufacturing has vanished, leading to inventory gaps on store shelves. Newer vehicles rely heavily on advanced, proprietary software and dealer-only hardware. This locks out the traditional “Do-It-Yourself” (DIY) mechanic, shrinking the core consumer base for local parts stores. Retailers over-expanded in previous decades. Advance Auto Parts alone operated more physical storefronts than Walmart, creating unsustainable property maintenance overhead.

The closures do not mean the death of the industry, but rather a harsh consolidation. Stronger competitors like AutoZone and O’Reilly Auto Parts remain highly stable. Physical storefronts still hold an irreplaceable advantage for emergency repairs—like when a commuter needs a replacement alternator or brake pads on a Sunday afternoon to make it to work on Monday.
