Best Guns to Have Against Looting Rioters When SHTF

2024 has been a year from hell, with just about every SHTF scenario imaginable playing out in real life.

Being a prepper, it is our job to learn what this means for each of us personally, and how to best handle civil unrest in our town, state or country.

If you are driving your car and the thugs try to do violence against you, your best weapon is probably a high-capacity 9mm pistol. I don’t like the idea of shooting out my own windows because the windows are a barrier against the looters and rioters. However, if one of them breaks a window, then they have committed an act that justifies the use of force in self-defense. I would recommend shooting through the broken window at anyone who is close to the car. Having a high-capacity pistol means not needing to reload as often while you are trying to drive. A 9mm typically has less penetration than the other popular pistol calibers made for high capacity pistols, namely .40 S&W and .45 ACP. The lower penetration means less chance of your bullets going through the attackers and hitting an innocent bystander.

In that situation you still need to be concerned about two huge issues.

1. Shooting under those conditions will be horrifying. Your aim won’t be good, and you’ll probably need to shoot one-handed. While you want high capacity to avoid reloads, you don’t want to shoot indiscriminately. In most jurisdictions, you are legally responsible for every round you fire. If you miss an attacker and the bullet hits an innocent person down the street, you could be prosecuted. Personally, I think the rioters and looters should be held legally responsible for everything that happens in a riot. If I were in charge and you shot at an attacker and hit an innocent bystander, I’d still be in favor of sending the rioters to jail for life to pay for causing that situation. Unfortunately, the law doesn’t work that way. Even if you can reach the point of realizing that you didn’t cause the situation that led to loss of innocent life, that loss would likely weigh on you for the rest of your life. If you’re in that situation, you want to hit the attackers who are the most imminent and direct threat and not anyone else (or even anything else).
2. Keeping control of a gun while you drive a car under terrible conditions will be difficult. If you put the gun on the seat beside you, the gun will likely fall off the seat during the difficult driving that you’ll have to do. That means that the gun won’t be there when you need it. If you put the gun on the floor at your feet, in your lap, or on the dashboard, the same could happen. If you put the gun between your legs, you likely will drop it on the floor as you switch from brake to accelerator and back. With a million things going through your mind, you have to be careful not to pull the trigger and shoot yourself or your car. Remembering to engage the safety when you aren’t shooting will be difficult. Remembering to disengage the safety when you need to shoot will be difficult. I don’t have an easy suggestion for how to handle this problem, but having some kind of plan that works for you will be good if you encounter this situation.

If you are at home, then other factors could suggest other weapons.

Shotguns are typically effective to about forty yards, but the pellets can still do damage beyond that distance. If you live in a densely-packed neighborhood, a shotgun can have some real advantages. You won’t be taking long shots at the attackers, so the limited range won’t be as big a problem. Because the pellets will lose energy quickly, a stray pellet hitting your neighbor’s house may be less likely to penetrate and hurt your neighbor. The disadvantage to a shotgun is that ammunition capacity is limited. Unless you buy some odd gun that is less likely to be reliable, you’re likely going to have a maximum capacity of seven or eight rounds. Most pure looters who are just there to steal things won’t face many shots from a shotgun, so seven shots may be enough to make the whole crowd go somewhere else. On the other hand, people who are more motivated to cause harm may not run in fear. In that case, the limited ammunition capacity and limited range could allow them to rush you. You might hit seven or eight of them, but they will be able to reach you. The other problem with shotguns is that most are somewhat unwieldy for people who aren’t well-trained in their use. If you find yourself having to deal with attackers from multiple directions, they could have a better chance of grabbing your shotgun.

A semi-automatic rifle or carbine would have the advantage of ammunition capacity as long as you live in a good state where the ignorant voters haven’t banned high-capacity magazines. A semi-automatic rifle in a caliber like .223 Remington/5.56 NATO will have low recoil, so you can get on target more quickly after each shot. (They also make these rifles in the 9mm pistol caliber, and those can be very effective as well.) These rifles will have more effective range than a shotgun does, and that will allow you to engage the enemies at longer range where they can’t rush you as easily. The drawback to rifles is that rifle rounds travel much farther than shotgun pellets do and can do more damage at longer ranges. The chances of a missed shot hurting a neighbor are higher. In a densely-packed neighborhood, this factor can be a problem. If you need to maneuver with a rifle, you will have some of the same problems that you’d have with a shotgun. They make firearms that are called pistols but have much of the same functionality of a rifle. Pistols may not legally have stocks for your shoulder, but they may have braces that can be used somewhat similarly. The shorter barrels can make them easier to maneuver and could make them an ideal choice in this situation.

A high-capacity 9mm pistol can also be effective in this situation. While most people would like something with a stock or brace that can be fired from the shoulder, a good shooter can use a 9mm pistol to ranges of fifty or sixty yards. If the thugs are coming up a longer driveway towards your house and you start shooting them at that distance, you have a chance of stopping a dozen or so of them. Sometimes, that’s enough to make the rest retreat.

If you own a store and are defending the store, the best choice will depend on the details of the store and the legal details of where you live.

In a narrow store with a securely-locked back door and walls that aren’t too far apart, the looters could only attack through the door and maybe the front window. The situation goes back to the advantages and disadvantages mentioned previously. A shotgun is awesomely effective because you don’t need to make long shots, but if a large number of looters keeps attacking, limited ammunition capacity will be a problem. A shotgun is also the least likely to send stray projectiles into the street towards innocent bystanders. A semi-automatic rifle has the advantage in ammunition capacity.

In any of these scenarios, your best chance of survival is having someone to help you. One person with a shotgun and another with a high-capacity firearm of any kind will have a better chance of holding off the thugs than anyone would have working alone with any weapon. The shotgun would stop the thugs and short range and hurt them at long range. A partner using a rifle or pistol to shoot anyone approaching the one with the shotgun can allow the person with the shotgun to reload.

The other critical factor in survival is being competent with the guns you have.
