Must Watch! How an EMP Will Affect Your State (the Effects of a Nuclear EMP Blast on the United States Would Be Profound and Multifaceted, Impacting Not Just Technology and...

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

A nuclear electromagnetic pulse (EMP) blast can have severe consequences for the United States, affecting infrastructure, technology, and daily life. Here’s a breakdown of its potential impacts:

1. Immediate Effects

  • Electromagnetic Pulse: A nuclear explosion at high altitudes generates a powerful EMP, which can disrupt or damage electronic devices and electrical systems within a wide radius.
  • Radiation and Blast Effects: While the EMP itself is non-lethal, the initial blast and radiation from the explosion can cause immediate destruction and casualties in the vicinity of the detonation.

2. Infrastructure Damage

  • Power Grids: The EMP can induce high-voltage spikes in electrical systems, potentially damaging transformers and substations, leading to widespread power outages.
  • Communication Systems: Telecommunications, including phones and internet, would likely be disrupted, complicating emergency responses and communications.
  • Transportation: Modern vehicles, which rely heavily on electronics, may become inoperable, affecting both civilian and emergency transport.

3. Economic Impact

  • Supply Chain Disruption: Prolonged outages of power and communication systems would disrupt supply chains, affecting everything from food distribution to manufacturing.
  • Financial Systems: The banking system, heavily reliant on electronic transactions, could face significant challenges, leading to economic instability.

4. Social Consequences

  • Public Panic: The sudden loss of electricity and communication could lead to panic, civil unrest, and challenges in maintaining order.
  • Health and Safety Risks: Hospitals and emergency services would struggle without power, impacting their ability to care for patients and respond to emergencies.

5. Long-term Recovery

  • Restoration of Services: Recovery could take weeks, months, or longer, depending on the severity of the damage to infrastructure.
  • Investment in Resilience: A successful recovery would likely lead to increased investments in EMP protection for critical infrastructure and a reevaluation of national security policies.

Mitigation Efforts

  • Hardening Infrastructure: Steps can be taken to harden electrical grids and communication systems against EMP effects.
  • Public Awareness: Educating the public about emergency preparedness and response can help mitigate the social consequences of such an event.

You Have One Hour Before A Huge EMP Hits The Earth, Knocking Out All Electricity. What Will You do?

What people don’t understand is that when an EMP hits Earth, and the rest of the world is unaware (I’m assuming that’s the case in this scenario); it’ll be months before a small amount of electricity is able to be made again. Even then, it would be for the government or construction workers. It’ll be years before some semblance of power comes along as an electrical grid.

After that, people think that an EMP hit would be relatively safe. I’m reality it is quite dangerous. Cars will suddenly stop on the highway. Electric cars will explode in flames. The worst part is the sparks from ignited wires that lay all around houses and buildings, starting fires everywhere. Even objects that aren’t connected to the power grid, but are metallic and shaped in the right way, will be affected by the EMP, and can release sparks or plasma from excessive heating of the air. Even some cars, if built the right way, may have sparks in the fuel line that would ignite the fuel inside, and thus explode.

At this point I better reiterate what an EMP is and what kind of EMP I’m expecting in this scenario. An EMP is the propogation of energy in the Electrical Field, Magnetic field, Electromagnetic Radiation or Electrical Conduction.

The above image shows one way an EMP can be made. The source of Gamma Radiation would be a Nuclear Bomb. But that’s kiddy stuff, nothing compares to the power of a solar flare

(what a beautiful diagram, it would be great if it was proven to be true)

These events are able to incite large amounts of energy using three of the four ways I mentioned earlier, all but electrical conductivity. So for the purpose of my answer, I’ll assume a massive solar flare will hit the Earth in an hour.

First I need to grab all the batteries and power banks I have and throw them outside. They’ll explode spectacularly and will cause fires. Then I’ll find my fire extinguisher and place it outside too. I’ll also need sunglasses to shield my eyes from bright lights. All those exploding power lines will be damaging to any spectators’ eyes. A phone would be useless, even if it could be saved, but I’ll save it nonetheless. I’ll stick it in my fridge so that the metal lining of the fridge will take the brunt of the EMP. I’ll also turn on my computer and save some important files in an SD Card, which is more durable than a USB. That’ll also go in my fridge, along with my smartwatch. The largest power bank I have will go in a plastic tupperware and goes into my freezer, just in case it burns regardless of the protection of the freezer. Once all of that is said and done I will stack up all the cash I have and keep it in a non-metal box. The last and least important thing to do is to throw all my metal food cans outside as they may cause sparks that would ignite my other foodstuffs. Finally I’ll turn of my power and unplug as many plugs as I can to make the total circuit of wiring in my house smaller, so there is less current induced, and go outside and sit next to my fire extinguisher, with my glasses on, hugging my kitten, planning out which of my neighbours are my favourite and therefore who to save first, and slowly count down the amount of time I have left.

Then off goes the flare and all the power. I let my kitten go loose and look inside my house for fires and damage. If there is too much, I’ll just run out the house. Otherwise I’ll try and extinguish what I can and help my neighbours.

After that there’s not much I can do. Live life as needed. Prepare for a surge in crime after a day or two. A brief summary of how I would hide from crime is to keep a weather eye on the street for groups of people. Keep my box of cash on the roof in a gutter, except when it rains. If I do see people, I climb through a window that leads to my roof and stay there until they leave. If they enter my house, there’s not much I can do about my food if they steal it. But I can keep valuables with me at all times.

After that, I can’t predict anymore. So that’s as far as I can plan.
