Shocking Secret! Why did secret service agents sit beside the Bush family at President George H. W. Bush’s funeral?
When George H. W. Bush died in 2018, there were 4 past U.S. presidents, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama and Bush junior along with Donald trump in attendance at Bush senior’s funeral, so along with the 2–4 U.S. Secret Service detail for each past president, along with trump’s 4–6 U.S. Secret Service detail, there were between 12–22 U.S. Secret Service agents also in attendance at this funeral.
There may have been some coordination between the 5 U.S. Secret Service details regarding what their duties would be, before, during and after Bush senior’s funeral, but none of the photos made public show obvious U.S. Secret Service agents sitting by the Bush family nor the present president and past three presidents.
USSS agents are in the 3rd row. See their lapel pins. In an event with multiple USSS protectees including the President of the United States (POTUS), the Presidential Protective Division (PPD) does the lead advance. PPD will handle the arrangements and all of the protective details including perimeter posts, etc. Usually, each USSS detail will have one agent in close proximity to their protectee, as seen above. It should be remembered that the site (Washington National Cathedral) had been swept by EOD, guests screened through magnetometers & other POTUS security precautions. So, the site was secure and it was not necessary to have an agent within arm’s reach of POTUS or the other USSS protectees. Normally, the agents would have been in the row immediately behind their protectee, but that row was taken by the current VP, former VPs, & their wives.
