Hong Kong Chaos Could Spark Conflict

If you’ve been watching the news over the last week, you might have noticed some large protests buzzing around Hong Kong. So much so that there was a threat of military involvement. US President Donald Trump has urged China of the risks of such a crackdown on Hong Kong and is hoping that the Chinese President will instead take the extraordinary step of sitting down with protesters as a way to help de-escalate the situation. Which coming from him is a big suggestion considering the constant news between Iran and the US, but that’s another story.

The protests began over plans – later put on ice – that would have allowed extradition from Hong Kong to mainland China. But they’ve now spread to reflect wider demands for democratic reform.

On Thursday, AFP news agency reported that thousands of Chinese military personnel have gathered across the border from Hong Kong, waving red flags and parading at a sports stadium in the city of Shenzhen.

Dozens of armoured personnel carriers and supply trucks were also parked nearby.

While there is possibility of armed responses, which some are taking very seriously, including Taiwan, there are hopes that nothing will come of it, but China’s economy is failing quickly and they need to do something before they lose their status of a superpower on the world stage.
