Women’s Club honors leaders at 44th annual Sojourner Truth Awards

The San Francisco Business and Professional Women’s Club celebrated its 44th Annual Sojourner Truth Awards and Scholarship Luncheon on Saturday, April 19, 2025, drawing a sold-out crowd of 130 community members, leaders and supporters to the Southeast Community Center. The annual event honored the achievements of distinguished women in leadership, business and professional excellence, while also investing in the promise of the next generation.

This year’s honorees included Carol Tatum, recipient of the prestigious Sojourner Truth Award; Brittney Doyle, named Business Woman of the Year; and LaShon Walker, recognized as Professional Woman of the Year. In addition to these outstanding women, three high school graduates – Jayana Harbor, London Robinson and Zari Moore – were awarded scholarships to support their higher education pursuits.

Cheryl Smith, president of the San Francisco Business and Professional Women’s Club, opened the event with a heartfelt welcome that set the tone for an afternoon filled with inspiration and empowerment. Tracy Ward, serving as mistress of ceremony, brought poise, passion and warmth to the program.

“From trailblazers to game changers – when you think about Black women, we’ve always been blazing the path for the next generation,” said Ward. “So when we’re giving out awards to wonderful women like Mrs. Tatum, LaShon Walker and others, these are women who have been doing work in the community for years, who are rooted in the community. And then we’re giving out scholarships to upcoming young Black girls who will be the game changers of the future. This is an example that there’s still so much good happening. There are people who are doing the right thing, people who are role models, who are in service to our community – and today is about celebrating those people.”

San Francisco Supervisor Shamann Walton delivered a special greeting that emphasized the importance of investing in women’s leadership and empowering young people through education and community support.

The afternoon featured a soul-stirring performance of “Hero” by vocalist Malkia Neal, leaving attendees visibly moved and energized. Each award recipient shared personal stories of perseverance, purpose and community, offering powerful reflections on their journeys.

Now in its 44th year, the Sojourner Truth Awards and Scholarship Luncheon continues to stand as a beacon of excellence, shining light on the contributions of Black women across generations. As the organization looks to the future, its commitment to honoring legacy and lifting up future leaders remains unwavering.
