The Black female officer who was hailed by netizens for punching a rioting Trump supporter during the Capitol Hill protest has been fired.

The woman, going by the name “Ashanti Smith” online, was an officer at Capitol. She was terminated soon after a video of the incident went viral after it was posted on Twitter on January 6. She explained that she acted in self-defense, saying the protestors were pushing and harassing her.

In the short video, the terminated officer is seen talking tough with the protestors before the hand of the white woman whom she punched is seen trying to touch or grab something from her. The white woman has since been identified by Newsweek as Therese Duke.

While her seniors aren’t pleased by Ashanti’s action, social media users showered her with praises, calling her a hero for her superfast punch.

As soon as Ashanti punched Therese, fellow police officers covered her and escorted her away from the protestors. Even then, some Trump supporters tried to hit her. They, however, didn’t get to cause her any harm.

A follow up video of Teresa, however, shows her wearing a bloody face, with a concerned party asking her “who hit you?” In response, she says, “that girl punched me in the face, that Black girl.”

Following the incident, and after the video of the incident went viral, Ashanti took to Twitter to share her side of the story before confirming that the incident led to her dismissal.

“Omg so never planned to go viral smh,” Ashanti said. “But yes that is in me in the video. They constantly harassed me and all 3 jumped me. Me hitting her was a reflex. I asked them constantly to stop touching me, following me, and bothering me, they kept surrounding me trying to steal my keys out of my pocket and trying to take my phone as seen in the video. Yes I lost my job. Yes I’m good. I’ll respond to everyone once I get my phones out of property.”

Soon after it was confirmed that she was fired, a GoFundMe page was created in her support. The page has raised close to $200k over the past six days.

Besides losing her job, Ashanti is also facing criminal charges.

“After being assaulted, I defended myself. I am now facing criminal charges,” she said, adding, “I have also been relieved from my employment pending an investigation, which places me in a hardship.”
