Mars Rover Curiosity images show mysterious rocks that appear and disappear! Feb 24, 2014
Rocks appear and disappear while the images are quite the same.
How is it possible that those rocks appear and disappear?
Two pictures show the same rock formation, but on the first photo there are NO rocks but on the second photo we see TWO rocks.
Both pictures are taken from some distance, so it is impossible that these rocks have been moved by the wheels of the curiosity.
SOL 549 – there are NO rocks.

These appearing, disappearing, and moving rocks are becoming undeniable, and probably problematic for NASA. Some rocks will sometimes look like lizards or squirrels or whatever, but rocks don’t just completely disappear or appear out of nowhere. And when they move it’s because something moved them.
The options are limited:
1) Wherever the Curiosity rover is, something or someone is moving rocks around; or
2) The pictures are doctored.
There are no other choices. Humm…
The pictures are doctored. But because NASA have so much photo-shopping to do on each image, they are missing some when doctoring different photos of the same scene.
The same happened with the earlier mysterious rock that just appeared out of nowhere.
I agree that the more likely choice is that the pictures are doctored. Certainly NASA has the means and opportunity to do so. That leaves us with trying to understand a motive. If Curiosity really is where it is purported to be and doing what we are told it is doing, what would be the need to doctor the images?
There wouldn’t be any need, unless NASA feels it necessary to replace pieces of the original images with cut-and-pasted rocks. Why do that?
Or maybe Curiosity isn’t really where we’re told, doing what we’re told it’s doing.
The only thing the same is the big rock. Both the foreground and background are different. Maybe a better question would be “why are they placing that big weird rock in different pictures?”
The disappearing rocks shown are not the only changes in the 2 photos.. The previous poster anon has it right.. The foreground of the top photo has a lot of differences.. The top photo also
has a small ridge near the top that casts a shadow.. The ridge is not anywhere in sight in the second photo.. The top photo has a lot more rough terrain in the foreground, and not nearly as much in the second photo. Seems like a lot more than just those 2 rocks are different. I don’t know what to make of the many differences, but it is surely strange indeed.

easily solved! in the top photo, the Rover is simply further back, and sitting on lower ground, and from the camera angle, looks to be on a tilt. so the rocks are just hidden behind the slope.

Yes. I found the original images on the NASA website. The big rock is sitting on the crest of a ridge. The ‘missing’ rocks are farther away, down the backside of the ridge, and appear in the 550 picture because camera is closer and looking somewhat down the backside of the ridge.
