“Why American Collapse is Extraordinary
Or, Why America’s Melting Down Faster Than Anyone Believed”

“Does anyone know what’s going to happen to America? Does America have a future? Or does it just collapse into…wait, what is it collapsing into, anyways? Let me ask you that another way. Are they authoritarians? Fascists? Nazis? Religious extremists? “Ethno-nationalist nativists”? Which one of these terms, ideas, which are also explanations, would you pick? I’d pick all of them.
American collapse is more like a megacollapse. A supercollapse. A hypercollapse. It combines elements of all the previous collapses which we know about in modern history — and then some of its own, too — and melds, combines, and blends them together into something like a a titanic, earth-shattering, historic, once in a millennium implosion. Think of it as a supervolcano that’s capable of taking down a whole continent, changing the world’s climate, tilting the globe off its axis, and darkening the sun itself for an age, erupting.
All that is precisely what it really is. Let’s go through all the elements American collapse combines, and why they matter — and if it frightens you to read this, well, the truth is: you should be scared. American continue to underestimate American collapse. They don’t really understand the first thing about it, yet.
Like Irani or Turkish collapse, American collapse is theocratic. It has obvious strands of fundamentalist theocracy woven into it. Regressive movements have sprung up to reverse institutional and legal progress for gays, women, minorities, all in the name of religious piety. American decline has always been driven by a hardcore fundamentalist minority, many of whom seem happy with Taliban style restrictions on basic civic freedoms.
Yet like Hungarian, Polish, or classic German collapse, American collapse is fascist, too. It isn’t just motivated by religious piety — but also racial purity. To call this “nativism” or “ethnonationalism” is to understate it. American collapse is made in large part of the genuinely fascist belief that the homeland only belongs to those pure in blood, who are superior in their innate humanity, and thus deserve to be able to repress, subjugate, and cleanse the impure. This is far beyond the idea that some people are mere “natives” or that some “ethnicities” are better at this, and worse at that. Of course, this strand of American collapse has deep roots in supremacy, the original sin America appears unable to expiate.
But like Russian collapse, American collapse is kleptocratic, too. The last few decades in American economic life have seen the rise of predatory mega-institutions. Titanic “healthcare management organizations” which shrink life expectancy. Banks and hedge funds which blow up the financial system.Corporations whose main aim seems to have not been to provide decent, stable employment — but to erode labor’s share of national income steadily, until it’s become a pittance. The kleptocrats are hard at work in America today, planning to sell off what remains of a broken government, from the postal service to parks — pocket the proceeds, and distribute them amongst cronies.
And yet like Spanish, Latin American or Soviet collapse, American is authoritarian, too. America is embarking on a national project now to build a system of detainment camps across the nation. In Soviet Russia, we would have simply called such a thing a gulag society. The basic institutions of government are being perverted, to become coercive, extremist, and repressive — “customs agents” are putting little infants in those camps,“national security” is being used to justify widespread human rights abuses, plans to strip citizenship are being devised by those whose job is to grant it.Perversion — things go backwards. Dissent gets you fired from a job, the powerful call for meeting all this abject politesse, and servility, not defiance, is the norm. There is a clear tyrannical current in society, whose main aim is to appease a rising, would-be dictator. All this is the stuff of classic authoritarian collapse.
And then American collapse adds its own new elements. It uses the “innovations” American society has pioneered, and turns them against democracy. Social media is used to spread propaganda at light-speed. Databases and surveillance are used to track people. The internet is a place for every manner of regressive force to stage attacks on civil society. Young men are radicalized in the open by extremist street preachers like the famous academic who tells them women are a cancer, a stain, and an infection.Predatory capitalism is used to create the very despair that fuels the annihilation anxieties which turn people to authoritarians. In that sense, American collapse is “hypercollapse”, made of bots and “fake news” and hacked elections, not just demagogues and speeches, which are radicalizing people already left ignorant by failing education institutions and civic norms, at maximum velocity, preventing them from believing in constitutional democracy, an open society, and the basic civilizing values of freedom, truth, justice, and equality.
So. Let me draw some simple conclusion from the above.
First, American collapse is a supercollapse, a mega-collapse, a hyper-collapse. It combines all the elements we know of in how nations fall into ruin — and that is a special, striking, and strange thing. Because most nations do not collapse that violently or explosively or combinatorially. For example, Soviet collapse was authoritarian — but not theocratic. German collapse was fascist — but not kleptocratic (contrary to popular belief, the average German grew richer for a time). Afghani collapse was theocratic — but not fascist. And so on. Only American collapse combines all the strands of ruin that we know of to produce the epic, catastrophic spectacle of mega-collapse — like a supervolcano taking out a whole continent erupting.
Second, American collapse is something unique, special, and singular.Because it combines all the strands of collapse that we know of — and then some — American collapse is already especially spectacular, isn’t it? Every day produces some new kind of almost absurd outrage, scandal, or atrocity, doesn it? That is because when you have a dozen kinds of collapse combined into one epic last meal, every bite can taste different. American collapse seems especially explosive, huge chunks of society turning into lava here, giant portions of democracy shooting off there, booming thunderclouds rolling on the horizon, sparks flying off in every direction, because it is.
Third, because American collapse combines all the strands of collapse in history, and then some, it is especially dangerous, powerful, and ruinous. What happens if collapse is just one-dimensional — theocratic, authoritarian, or fascist? Well, it takes time for institutions to erode, norms to corrode, and people to break. But when all these forces combine, they do so with a force greater than the sum of their parts. That is why it has taken just two years to get to infants in concentration camps, ethnic bans, and public demonization and scapegoating by a head of state. These forces are multiplicative, or maybe combinatorial — not just additive. Theocracy times fascism times authoritarianism times kleptoracy yields a kind of pyroclastic flow — that cloud of ash and thunder rolling down a volcano — larger, faster, and more deadly than in modern history.
So. Does America have a future? Let me ask that another way. Can you cap a supervolcano?”
