British prime Minister Theresa May, in an update on the London Bridge terror attack, stressed Sunday that the three attacks in the UK in three months were not connected by a network, but the work of terrorists inspired to copy one another. They are bound together by a single evil ideology of Islamic extremism, perversion of Islam and the truth. Defeating this ideology is one of the great challenges of our time.
She praised the London police’s rapid response and their killing of the three attackers inside 8 minutes from receiving the first emergency call. May also reported that since the Westminster incident in March, the security and intelligence agencies had disrupted five credible plots. Extremism is now on the line, the PM declared. Military action in Iraq and Syria and a permanent counter-terror operation are not enough. Things must change. “There is far too much tolerance of extremism in our country,” she insisted. The “whole country must take it on and we must stop living in segregated communities.”
Both leading parties have suspended their election campaigns for the day, but will resume Monday and the June 8 election will take place on time.
