How to Restore Your Normal Levels of Testosterone, Suggested By Scientists

Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Recent studies conducted by some academic institutes suggested that garlic may have a potential in modified the levels of serum testosterone in the blood, depending to over or under expressions.

Sex hormone testosterone plays an essential role on the male reproductive physiology, including the testes, a primary productive organ in production of spermatozoa and reproductive hormones.

Furthermore, the male steroid hormone also processes a specific function in building bone and muscle mass as well as stimulating sexual desire in both sexes.

In women, testosterone is produced by the ovaries in women in small amount. The hormone also produced small quantities by the adrenal glands in both sexes.

Truly,  over expression of testosterone may cause reduced production of antioxidants, such as glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) by natural antioxidant enzymes and increased presence of free radical in the body, that can lead to cytotoxicy and weaken function of immune system.

In other words, abnormal high levels of testosterone in the blood, can alter the balance the ratio of antioxidants and free radicals in the body, leading to free radicals in induction of oxidative stress, a primarily causes of chronic ailments.

Some researchers suggested that over production of testosterone may associate to increase risk of prostate cancer, caused by oxiadtive stress effects in the prostate gland.

On the other hand, under expression of testosterone may induce symptoms of erectile dysfunction, reduced sperm count and sperm quality, decreased libido or sexual activity, infertility, reduced muscle mass…… and increased body fat.

According to the Catholic University of The Sacred Heart, hypogonadism in men also reduced production of natural antioxands that also lead to oxidative stress, in turn related with augmented cardiovascular risk(8).
In immune response, low levels of testosterone may increase immune production of white blood cells that protects the body against infection. However, prolonged period of low levels of testosterone can also lead to long term over production of white blood cells, a leading cause of auto immune diseases.

Garlic may be the next generation of natural testosterone reducer or inducer. Garlic increases production of the hormone when it is low and inhibits excessive testosterone when it is high.

Garlic (Allium sativum) is a species in the onion genus, belongings to family Amaryllidaceae, native to central Asia.

The herb  or food has been used popularly in traditional and Chinese medicine in treating common cold and flu to the Plague, blood pressure, cholesterol, natural antibiotic, etc.

Dr. Prasad S lead research at the Industrial Toxicology Research Centre, diallyl sulfide (DAS), a constituent of garlic, exerted antioxidant activities against testosterone-induced oxidative stress in male Swiss albino mice, by significantly restored the testosterone-induced antioxidant enzymes and decreased lipid peroxidation.

The effects of garlic supplementation on protein metabolism also suggested that dietary supplementation with 0.8 g/100 g garlic alters hormones associated with protein anabolism by increasing testicular testosterone and decreasing plasma corticosterone in rats fed a high protein diet.

In the concerns of conventional medicine driamycin (ADR), a potent cytotoxic drug that cause many adverse effects on different body organs, researchers at the Faculty of Medicine, Zagazig University conducted an experience to evaluate the effect of aged garlic extract (AGE) when it is used combination with driamycin (ADR).

At the end of the study, researcher found that aged garlic extract (AGE), a garlic preparation, AGE can be used as an adjuvant therapy to resume male infertility and weak spermatogenesis induced by cytotoxic drugs or other environmental toxins through its cytoprotective and antioxidant properties.

In fact, like all natural phytochemiecals, garlic is both testosterone booster and testosterone reducer, depending to the levels of testosterone in the body and amount of garlic intake.

However, use of garlic extracts and supplements should be taken with care, as overdoses may induce liver toxicity.
