The Reason Your Ear Canal Itches and What to Do about It

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

One of the more annoying problems that we may face is when we have an itchy ear. Not only is it difficult because we can’t seem to reach it, it can drive you crazy, because nobody wants to dig in their ear in public.

If you are one of those individuals with a chronic ear itching problem, there may be a rather simple explanation. In fact, understanding why your ear itches is the first step to take when treating the problem, which is also fairly simple as well.

Before you know it, you may just be free of the itchiness altogether. Considering the fact that many people have been plagued with this problem for years, finding a simple solution is awesome.

What Causes Itchy Ears?

There are a number of old wives tales about itchy ears, including some very old superstitions. In reality, an ear has nothing to do with superstition, it has to do with nerve fibers. The inside of the ear is full of nerve fibers and if you have fibers that are sensitive, you may experience more itchiness than the common person.

Other reasons why you may have an itchy ear is because of an allergic reaction, dry skin, psoriasis or an ear infection. If you have too much water in the ear, perhaps from swimming, it may cause itchiness as well. Fortunately, most cases of itchy ear are harmless and easy to treat.

If you notice any draining, bleeding or hearing loss along with itchiness, it is important to speak to your doctor.

How to Treat Itchy Ears

The worst thing you can do if you have an itchy ear is to stick something in the ear to scratch it. It may feel good, but you risk causing damage that could make you susceptible to infection. You may also puncture the eardrum.

Rather than sticking something in your ear, try some of these home remedies.

1. Alcohol and Vinegar: Using a 1:1 mixture of alcohol and vinegar may help. Use a dropper or small spoon to pour a little of the mixture in your ear. Tilt your head so that the solution stays in for a few seconds and then tilt your head the other way to allow it to drain. Keep this to a minimum, as it can dry the ear canal.

2. Warm Oil: Warm up your favorite natural oil, such as coconut, tea tree or olive oil. Make sure it is a comfortable temperature and then put a few drops in the ear.

3. Hydrogen Peroxide: A 1:1 mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water can be put in the ear using a dropper. It helps to clean out ear wax.

4. Aloe Vera: It is recommended that you use 3 to 5 drops of aloe vera. It produces an anti-inflammatory effect and balances pH levels.

5. Elderberry Syrup: Using this recipe, you could make your own elderberry syrup. It helps to soothe earaches and has antiviral properties.

If you have an ear itch that is persistent, speak to a doctor. You may need some type of antibiotic ointment or special eardrops.
