Ice Bucket Challenge: Is Cyanobacteria BMAA Causing ALS?

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Have you seen the ice bucket challenge?

Seems to me everyone is jumping on this, and while the money going to the research is good, I challenge people to research for themselves what is causing this. ALS is exploding all over the country. WHY??

Let me make a suggestion, gleened from scientific research. It’s being caused by a toxin called BMAA, being produced from toxic cyanobacteria (also known as blue green algae) that is taking over the world waters. The same cyanobacteria that recently caused the entire city of Toledo to shut down their water.

“What started as a study of the island of Guam’s fruit bats and cycads, ancient seed-bearing plants that resemble palms, led to a startling hypothesis: Could cyanobacteria cause neurodegenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s?

There are potentially bigger problems further north. According to Stommel’s research in New England, the rate of ALS doubles around lakes where cyanobacterial blooms have been reported. For people living around Lake Mascoma in New Hampshire, the prevalence of ALS was 10 to 25 times the normal rate.”

Is that why Schumer said this in May of this year?

“Federal environmental officials should develop standards and guidelines to help protect New Yorkers from toxins released by blue-green algae, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer said Wednesday.

Schumer, New York’s senior Democratic senator, noted that algal blooms have been observed on numerous lakes, ponds and reservoirs in the state, and more are expected this summer and fall.”

What’s concerning is that the US govt recognized the problem back in 2009.

Recent reports that BMAA is produced by cyanobacteria in diverse ecosystems and is present in brain and spinal cord tissues from sporadic ALS and Alzheimer’s patients as well as brains of ALS/PDC patients provide strong motivation for further investigations of its toxic mechanisms and contributions to human disease.

The above link also says the bicarbonate (baking soda) affects the BMAA. Is that a potential cure being hidden??

Also, the is some new interesting research using human friendly hydrogen peroxide in Finland.

People with fish tanks have known that for a long time.
