Mental Health Agenda – Doctors & Nurses Next On Sovietisation Hit List
The NHS needs to radically change the way it helps doctors and nurses who experience trauma in their daily work, the Health Secretary has said.
Matt Hancock said significant improvements in attitudes towards mental health across society, had not translated into giving enough support to those working on the NHS frontline.
The Health Secretary, who was appointed in July, said he planned to make major changes in the help and training given to those dealing with gruelling and potentially traumatic experiences in healthcare.
He told The Telegraph that too often doctors and nurses were expected to “get on with it” when dealing with situations which could leave them mentally scarred.
Mr Hancock said: “I think its great that there’s been a significant change in the way that society things about mental health in the last couple of years with MPs talking about mental health and the goal of putting mental health concerns on a par with physical health.
”I think this has been overlooked in the medical profession itself and i think there is a big change we need to see. The people who work in medicine often witness very traumatic events,” he said.

Mr Hancock said he was concerned about the number of suicides among doctors. “I want to bring a radical change to the workforce who have witness traumatic events include better training, everyone having access to the support they need outside of their line management and much more support to NHS staff with mental health difficulties many of which can be caused by their work,” he added.
