Dormant Fracking Well Explodes, Families Evacuated, Man Says He Feels Like People Sold Their Soul To The Devil

There is an interesting situation currently going on in Ohio. 

 

According to state records, a well that had been dormant for a year, exploded..

 

SARDIS, Ohio — This hollow used to be peaceful.

Not long ago, Randy Heater and his daughters would roam the Monroe County hills to hunt, setting up deer stands on quiet fall days when the air was still.

On Dec. 13, that stillness shattered.

Crews lost control of a fracked well on a hilltop near Heater’s house. Natural gas surged into the air.

From their backyard, less than a mile from the well, the Heaters heard it. The rushing gas sounded like a broken air hose, Heater said — a deep, steady WHOOOOSH.

As the weekend approached, gas was still spewing uncontrollably.

Families within a mile and a half of the well have been evacuated, although not all have left their homes. They’ve been allowed back during the day, to grab clothes and feed animals, but they are supposed to be elsewhere at night.

The county emergency management agency says the families might be allowed home for good by Wednesday, Christmas Eve, but officials aren’t sure.

So now families have been out of their homes for 11 days. from a dormant well??

No the well was left for a year, so the sythetic bacteria they use in the injected water, could grow, create pressure, which forces out the gas (and bacteria) laden water when the cap is removed. Sometimes, they will inject CO2 also, as the bacteria they are using thrive on it..

 

It’s the same type of bacteria has plagued Lake Erie for years and shut down the Toledo water system this summer..a self replicating synthetic bacteria based on cyanobacteria and yeast is being injected into these fracking wells, left for a while to eat the organic substance trapped in the shale, which in turn produced methane and hydrogen sulfide and lots and lots of pressure.

 

Microorganisms can synthesize useful products by fermenting low-cost substrates or raw materials. Therefore, MEOR can substitute chemical enhanced oil recovery (CEOR), which is a very pricey technology. In MEOR, the chosen microbial strains are used to synthesize compounds analogous to those used in CEOR processes which are very expensive, to increase the recovery of oil from depleted and marginal reservoirs. Furthermore, microbial products are biodegradable and have low toxicity [7, 14, 15]. Microbial technologies are becoming approved universally as lucrative and eco-friendly approaches to improve oil production [16, 17].

Maybe it why the man who is evacuated from his home for Christmas due to the “dormant” well blowout said this:

“ I feel like the valley sold its soul to the devil.”

MEOR is a three-pronged approach that manipulates the environment around existing oil reserves. First microorganisms are injected to break down locked crude oil. This reduces the oil’s viscosity. Viscosity is crude oil’s resistance to flow and, when reduced, the oil moves more like water. High viscosity is a property commonly found in heavy oil. Gases such as hydrogen, nitrogen gas, methane, and carbon dioxide reduce oil viscosity and improve its flow. Likewise, solvents, such as alcohols and ketones, dissolve in oil to reduce its viscosity. 

The second step of the MEOR process is displacement. When the microorganisms are injected into the rock, they naturally metabolize. As the microorganisms metabolize, they produce carbon dioxide gas and biomass. Biomass is a biological material that interacts with environmental systems. Carbon dioxide gas and biomass both have the ability to displace oil and push it toward the surface for extraction. 

Selective plugging is the third step of MEOR.  Rock that is far underground where drilling occurs is porous and is full of tiny holes which crude oil can flow. The man-made microorganisms have an ability to secrete exopolysaccharides. The exopolysaccharides are polymers that protect the microorganisms from drying out in the rock and direct them to block the tiny holes. Ultimately, once the porous holes are blocked it forces the oil to go up and be recovered.
