9 Weird and Wonderful Alternative Housing Ideas

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Your home is an expression of who you are. As much as people talk about clothing as a form of self-expression, your home may be the most prominent piece of self-expression there is.

If the cookie-cutter, picket fences homes of Ward and June Cleaver aren’t speaking to you, maybe it’s time to try something different. The good news is that there are plenty of options for alternative housing ideas out there.

If you’re looking for a home that fits your style, try on these for size.

Weird But Cool Alternative Housing Ideas

Tiny houses are so popular that they’re practically a movement today. People love the minimalist lifestyle and the eco-conscious way these homes operate. Still, there are plenty of other unconventional homes to explore.

1. Shipping Container Homes

This may be our favorite item on this list because it can have such a cool look. You’ve seen shipping containers, those large steel rectangular boxes that cross the ocean on barges. Some genius folks have found ways to make them into cozy, modern homes, sometimes combining a few containers together.

In many cases, these shipping container homes are refinished in a beautiful, modern way. In fact, you may not know they were made from shipping containers at all.

As cool as shipping container homes can look, the high-end ones aren’t DIY. One company that does great work is Sundog Structures. They’ll build standard or customized structures, often several stories, with a contemporary look.

2. Cob Houses

If you admired the adobos you saw in your history books back in your school days, this might be the choice for you. A cob house has a similar look and it’s also made from natural materials.

When it comes to structures, cob is a mixture of straw and earth. When it’s used to create a house’s structure, it takes on the look of clay or a stucco-like material.

3. Treehouses

Don’t turn up your nose at this one. We’re not talking about the rickety treehouses of childhood.

Master carpenters and amateurs alike across the world have created gorgeous homes in trees. Some even have multiple stories and all the amenities you would expect in any modern home. If you’re looking for a way to leave society behind and bond with nature, this might be your nirvana.

Some builders take it one step further with a type of treehouse called a free spirit sphere. These structures look like giant wooden balls suspended from tall trees. You’ll have a ladder or staircase to give you access, but with the sway of a free-hanging structure.

4. Rammed Earth Homes

Remember building sandcastles as a kid? A rammed earth house is similar but on a more permanent basis.

To build a rammed earth house, you’ll start by building frames for your walls, usually made of wood. Next, you’ll compact earth materials like soil and aggregates into these frames. When the materials are in place, you remove the frame.

Voila, you’re left with a wall from the very earth beneath your feet.

5. Wood Pallet Structures

Wood pallets seem to be the adult version of popsicle sticks: a staple of every and any craft project. We’re not surprised to see that the pallet craze has hit homes as well.

As the name suggests, a wood pallet house is made from wood pallets. Of course, you need to incorporate other materials as well to make the structure stable. Still, the wood pallets produce a rustic and creative look.

If you’re feeling ambitious, you can even build your own wood pallet house. If you’re looking for a way to live while paying off a mountain of student loans, this might be your most economical choice.

6. Geodesic Dome

If you’ve seen the Epcot Center sphere in Florida, you have the idea of a geodesic dome. These domed structures are made of a series of triangles to give them a cool geometric look.

Geodesic domes aren’t a new form of alternative housing, but they’ve taken on a cool twist. Contemporary builders are giving them a cool modern look, sometimes using a variety of materials.

7. Silo Home

If you live in an area with a lot of farming, you see silos on a daily basis. Have you ever thought about converting them into houses, though?

Innovative builders are taking these silos and fitting them with staircases, appliances, and other amenities to make them great homes. In some cases, they can join several silos together for more square footage.

If you’re a farmer at heart and you want your home to reflect it, a silo might be the perfect choice. Make sure you find a way to get rid of the smell from whatever the silo stored so you don’t have a smelly home, though.

8. Earth Berm House

For fans of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, a hobbit house has become a dream. Little did you know that people have been doing this for ages. They just call them earth berm houses instead of hobbit houses.

An earth berm house is built into the side of a berm or hill. While the front door is clearly visible, the rest of the house is under the natural earth’s structure. It gives you a natural look while boosting your energy efficiency.

9. Yurt

A yurt is a circular tent, often the size of a typical house. Yurts have gone through a bit of an identity crisis in the US. They used to be homes for “hippies” who wanted to live in nature. Recently they’ve become a common amenity for the wealthy as a zen outbuilding.

However, yurts are also becoming more popular as a primary housing option. Modern yurts are built with great stability and energy efficiency, and their designs can be downright gorgeous.

Finding Your New Creative Home

The world is filled with picket fences and white vinyl siding. It’s also filled with people who don’t fit that mold.

If you’re not a cookie-cutter person, why would you want to live in a cookie-cutter house? The alternative housing ideas above can give you a great way to embrace your creativity and your unique style.
