When Did I Get Old…When Did Everything Change? — Via the Wayfaring Gal (6/29/2025)

Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. (Jas 4:14)

Growing old has been interesting to say the least. If it wasn’t for God the Father and my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ guiding me, protecting me and strengthening me throughout my years, I never would have made it.

Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. (Isa 41:10)

My Mama had a saying: “It’s a great life if you don’t weaken”. Wow, did she have some doozies!

Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old. (Prov 23:22)

Isa 40:28-31:

Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding. (Isa 40:28)
He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. (Isa 40:29)
Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: (Isa 40:30)
But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. (Isa 40:31)

And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you. (Isa 46:4)

People always say, “you’re not old, you’re just getting older” and I have noticed those people are always younger than I am. It makes me smile, because at what point then, am I “old”?

With each passing decade of my life, the age of whom I thought was “old” has advanced as well. Now in my mid-seventies, “old” to me, would be being in my nineties! And so it goes…

So when did I get old? In many respects I believe it is a state of mind.

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. (Phil 4:8)

My mind says I’m still in my twenties and thirties, but my body belies my thoughts. I feel like I should be able to jump up and run outside to the mailbox; when in fact, I can no longer even walk there under my own steam.

But none of that really matters now, because in the end, the Bible tells us, if we have not charity (God’s Divine Agape Love), it profits us nothing:

1Cor 13:1-3:

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. (1Cor 13:1)
And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. (1Cor 13:2)
And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing. (1Cor 13:3)

All the things I did in my life until the day the Lord called me out of this world, were all vanity; all of it. I believe the reason each one of us is here, is to exact our redemption through the process of the Strait Gate and Narrow Way.

Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. (Eccl 12:13)

Being obedient to the commands of Jesus; that we might someday be found worthy of true authentic salvation via God’s judgment at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. (John 14:21)

Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. (Jas 1:12)

Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; (1Pet 1:13)

All that being said, I will never give up my search as I walk this Narrow Way, no matter how old I get. Time marches on, and there is nothing more important than our eternal destination.

They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing; (Ps 92:14)

And the Lord warned us that our lives could all end suddenly and unexpectedly:

But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? (Luke 12:20)

The above verse is a hard thing to anyone who is invested in this world and not in the truth of Jesus. So as usual, I am always reminded of my own need for patience, especially as the years on this walk grow on:

In your patience possess ye your souls. (Luke 21:19)

But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. (Jas 1:4)

Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy. (Jas 5:11)

When Did I Get Old | Derrick Dove & The Peacekeepers | Lyrics:

Oh my, this is a beautiful video! It brought me to tears. When we think back on times past and realize how insignificant those little things were, then we realize how fast time slips by; it makes one appreciate family & friends alike.” —BLF

Lyrics

When Did I Get Old

When did I get old?
When did everythin’ change?
I don’t recognize this world
I don’t remember this pain

Did time speed up?
Or did I slow down?
When did I get old?
It’s all behind me now

I used to fly so high
And not fear a thing
I was 10 foot tall
Everybody knew my name

But the world keeps turning
Statues begin to fall
And now I’m just a man
Who used to have it all

So when did I get old?
When did everythin’ change?
I don’t recognize this world
I don’t remember this pain

Did the time speed up?
Or did I slow down?
So when did I get old?
It’s all behind me now

Well there ain’t much left
Of the man I was
I’m just a rusty outline
Covered in dust

But it happens to the best
The best of us all
Another one rises
While another one falls

When did I get old?
When did everythin’ change?
I don’t recognize this world
I don’t remember this pain

Did time speed up?
Or did I slow down?
When did I get old?
It’s all behind me now
When did I get old?

It’s almost over now

Eccl 7:1-6:

A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one’s birth. (Eccl 7:1)
It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart. (Eccl 7:2)
Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better. (Eccl 7:3)
The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth. (Eccl 7:4)
It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools. (Eccl 7:5)
For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool: this also is vanity. (Eccl 7:6)

Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. (Jas 4:9)
Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up. (Jas 4:10)

Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. (Heb 13:8)
