LISTEN: “Ask, Seek, Knock…And All These Things Shall Be Added Unto You” — Via the Wayfaring Gal (10/6/2024)

Matthew 7:13-15:

Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: (Matt 7:13)

Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. (Matt 7:14)

Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. (Matt 7:15)

The strait gate/narrow way is the only way Jesus gave us to find eternal life with Him.

He never mentioned a “sinner’s prayer” nor an “altar call” nor a simple “ABCs of Salvation” that I can find in the Holy Bible.

According to Jesus, the way of salvation is actually a journey of much trial, tribulation, and judgment before coming to salvation via REBIRTH.

Authentic regeneration occurs at the end of the narrow way road, said Jesus (Matt 7:14).

Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. (John 3:3)

These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. (John 16:33)

I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. (Rev 3:18)

Ask, seek, and knock are interesting words indeed. They indicate the requirements and the diligence necessary to search for the real truth of the matter at hand.

It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter. (Prov 25:2)

DEFINITIONS:

ASK In Strong’s Concordance is number: G154
αἰτέω
aiteō
ahee-teh’-o
Of uncertain derivation; to ask (in generally):—ask, beg, call for, crave, desire, require. Compare G4441.

Webster’s 1828 Dictionary definition of “crave

CRAVE, v.t.

  1. To ask with earnestness or importunity; to beseech; to implore; to ask with submission or humility, as a dependent; to beg; to entreat.
As for my nobler friends, I crave their pardons.
Joseph–went in boldly to Pilate, and craved the body of Jesus. Mark 15.
  2. To call for, as a gratification; to long for; to require or demand, as a passion or appetite; as, the stomach or appetite craves food.
  3. Sometimes intransitively, with for before the thing sought; as, I crave for mercy.

SEEK in Strong’s Concordance is number: G2212
ζητέω
zēteō
dzay-teh’-o
Of uncertain affinity; to seek (literally or figuratively); specifically (by Hebraism) to worship (God), or (in a bad sense) to plot (against life):—be (go) about, desire, endeavour, enquire (for), require, (X will) seek (after, for, means). Compare G4441.

Webster’s 1828 Dictionary definition of “endeavour

ENDEAV’OR, n. endev’or. An effort; an essay; an attempt; an exertion of physical strength, or the intellectual powers, towards the attainment of an object.
The bold and sufficient pursue their game with more passion, endeavor and application, and therefore often succeed.
Imitation is the endeavor of a later poet to write like one who has written before him on the same subject.
Labor is a continued endeavor, or a succession of endeavors.
ENDEAV’OR, v.i. endev’or. To exert physical strength or intellectual power, for the accomplishment of an object; to try; to essay; to attempt. In a race, each man endeavors to outstrip his antagonist. A poet may endeavor to rival Homer, but without success. It is followed by after before a noun; as, the christian endeavors after more strict conformity to the example of Christ.

  1. v.t. To attempt to gain; to try to effect.
It is our duty to endeavor the recovery of these beneficial subjects.

KNOCK in Strong’s Concordance is number: G2925
κρούω
krouō
kroo’-o
Apparently a primary verb; to rap:—knock

Webster’s 1828 Dictionary definition of “rap

RAP, v.i. [L. rapio, rapidus, rapid.]
To strike with a quick sharp blow; to knock; as, to rap on the door.
RAP, v.t. To strike with a quick blow; to knock.
with one great peal they rap the door.
To rap out, to utter with sudden violence; as, to rap out an oath. [In the popular language of the United States, it is often pronounced rip, to rip out an oath; L. crepo.]
RAP, v.t.

  1. to seize and bear away, as the mind or thoughts; to transport out of one’s self; to affect with ecstasy or rapture; as rapt into admiration.
I’m rapt with joy to see my Marcia’s tears.
Rapt into future times the bar begun.
  2. To snatch or hurry away.
    And rapt with whirling wheels.
Rapt in a chariot drawn by fiery steeds.
  3. To seize by violence.
  4. To exchange; to truck. [Low and not used.]
To rap and rend, to seize and tear or strip; to fall on and plunder; to snatch by violence. They brought off all they could rap and rend. [See Rend.]
RAP, n. a quick smart blow; as a rap on the knuckles.

That last bit on “rap” reminds me of the next verses, as well as the word importunity, found only one time in the King James Bible:

And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force. (Matt 11:12)

The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it. (Luke 16:16)

I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth. (Luke 11:8)

All of these descriptions of the words in question (ask, seek, knock) imply something difficult and urgent; and dare I say, something you have to work at; to exert oneself to gain the victory and yet Jesus said no one can come unto him except the Father “draw” him (John 6:44).

Somewhat of a mystery, just as the Bible says there is, but that’s for a whole other Blog post.

Jesus also used the term overcometh at the end of each of the seven letters to the seven churches in the Book of Revelation, indicating a great reward will be given to those people who become OVERCOMERS.

The definition for the word overcometh is very interesting as well:

OVERCOMETH is Strong’s Concordance Number: G3528
νικάω
nikaō
nik-ah’-o
From G3529; to subdue (literally or figuratively):—conquer, overcome, prevail, get the victory.

Webster’s 1828 Dictionary definition of “overcome:

OVERCOME, v.t. [See Come.]

  1. To conquer; to vanquish; to subdue; as, to overcome enemies in battle.
  2. To surmount; to get the better of; as, to overcome difficulties or obstacles.
  3. To overflow; to surcharge. [Not used.]
  4. To come upon; to invade. [Not used.]
OVERCOME, v.i. To gain the superiority; to be victorious.

OVERCOMER, n. One who vanquishes or surmounts.

Webster’s 1828 Dictionary definition of “vanquish“:

VAN’QUISH, v.t. [L. vinco, vincio, to bind.]

  1. To conquer; to overcome; to subdue in battle; as an enemy.
They vanquished the rebels in all encounters.
  2. To defeat in any contest; to refute in argument.

For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. (1John 5:4)

To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne. (Rev 3:21)

He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. (Rev 21:7)

So Jesus and his word show us quite clearly that it is through much tribulation and anguish that we might become overcomers.

I am still waiting for the revelation of Jesus Christ and to find the truth.

If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; (Prov 2:4)
Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. (Prov 2:5)

These are the promises I set my face as a flint for; waiting with great anticipation and looking daily for that blessed hope (Titus 2:13).

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. (Matt 6:33)

Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: (Matt 7:7)

For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. (Matt 7:8)

Knock, Knock, Knock…

John 10:7-9:

Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep. (John 10:7)
All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them. (John 10:8)
I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. (John 10:9)

And then Jesus said a very curious thing:

Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. (Rev 3:20)

Not only are we knocking, Jesus says he will knock on our door as well (the entrance to our inner heart), and call us by name (John 10:3)!

If we unlock that door, Jesus says he will come in and sup with us.

This is that mysterious revelation of Jesus Christ (totally denied by the modern church) where we will move from “having faith” to actually “knowingTHE TRUTH:

John 8:31-32:

Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; (John 8:31)
And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. (John 8:32)

John 14:20-21:

At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. (John 14:20)
He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. (John 14:21)

And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables: (Mark 4:11)

1Pet 1:3-9:

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, (1Pet 1:3)
To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, (1Pet 1:4)
Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. (1Pet 1:5)
Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: (1Pet 1:6)
That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ: (1Pet 1:7)
Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory: (1Pet 1:8)
Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls. (1Pet 1:9)

The above song is one of the sweetest songs; I had never heard it before until recently. This young lady has an angelic voice; singing a very basic, simple and yet powerful, profound song about the commands of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

It is a wonderful reminder of the obedience and diligence required by us that will lead to eternal life in heaven with our Lord.

And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? (Luke 6:46)

If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love. (John 15:10)

But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. (Heb 11:6)

LYRICS

Ask, Seek, Knock

I’ve come to this place
To silence all the noise
My soul longs to see your face

My heart longs to hear your voice
The one the earth proclaims
As the one who holds it all
And I just want a taste
Oh won’t you let your spirit fall

You told me to seek
That’s why I’m here
You told me to ask
So I will lift up this prayer

You told me to knock
I’ll beat ‘till my knuckles are bruised
‘Cause you promised the door
Would be opened up to you

I’ve come to this place
To silence all the noise
My soul longs to see your face

My heart longs to hear your voice
The one the earth proclaims
As the one who holds it all
And I just want a taste
Oh won’t you let your Spirit fall

You told me to seek
That’s why I’m here
You told me ask
So I will lift up this prayer

You told me to knock
I’ll beat ‘till my knuckles are bruised
‘Cause you promised the door
Would be opened up to you

When I call upon your name
You’ll deny me no good thing
And when I ask
You’ll meet the need
‘Cause you’re the God who gives perfectly

And when I call upon your name
You’ll deny me no good thing
And when I ask
You’ll meet the need
‘Cause you’re the God who gives perfectly

You told me to seek
That’s why I’m here
You told me to ask
So I will lift up this prayer

You told me to knock
I’ll beat ‘till my knuckles are bruised
‘Cause you promised the door
Would be opened up to you

‘Cause you promised the door
Would be opened up to you

If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him? (Matt 7:11)
