LISTEN: “One Drop of Water…Is All We’ll Ever Need” — Via the Wayfaring Gal (6/9/2024)

For he maketh small the drops of water: they pour down rain according to the vapour thereof: (Job 36:27)

The following song is a famous old Bluegrass Gospel tune that reminds me of the “old time religion” music from long ago, with great banjo and fiddle playing, as well as an important message!

The song is inspired by the Bible’s parable of the “rich man and Lazarus” that Jesus spoke of in the Book of Luke:

Luke 16:21-25:

And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, (Luke 16:20)
And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. (Luke 16:21)
And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; (Luke 16:22)
And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. (Luke 16:23)
And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. (Luke 16:24)
But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. (Luke 16:25)

This also brings to mind another parable Jesus gave us about being rich in the world, but not rich toward God:

Luke 12:16-21:

And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: (Luke 12:16)
And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? (Luke 12:17)
And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. (Luke 12:18)
And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. (Luke 12:19)
But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? (Luke 12:20)
So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God. (Luke 12:21)

One Drop Of Water | Ralph Stanley | Lyrics:

Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me. (Matt 19:21)

While this song is about the poor, lost rich man going to Hell, it also has a “water” component to it. Water not only quenches your thirst, but it is also code for the Divine Agape Love of God in the Bible, and that’s why it is the only thing we’ll ever need.

This truth is found in both the Old and New Testaments:

A fountain of gardens, a well of living waters, and streams from Lebanon. (Song 4:15)

Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. (John 4:10)

The Divine Agape Love of God…It is the one thing we do not have in this world and can only obtain it at REBIRTH, when it is bestowed upon us by God Himself, if we so do what Jesus commanded us to do:

Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. (1John 3:1)

John 1:12-13:

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: (John 1:12)
Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. (John 1:13)

This is why Jesus said:

John 3:3-8:

Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. (John 3:3)
Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? (John 3:4)
Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. (John 3:5)
That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. (John 3:6)
Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. (John 3:7)
The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. (John 3:8)

Ultimately there is only one thing that really matters. We must be BORN AGAIN and Jesus gave us only one way to do that: via the Strait Gate/Narrow Way walk which leadeth unto eternal life:

Matt 7:13-14:

Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: (Matt 7:13)
Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. (Matt 7:14)

And so here I am, sitting in the lowest room, waiting for He who bade me to come:

But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee. (Luke 14:10)

It is most definitely a lesson in patience, but how much more has the Lord’s patience been tried as He waits on us as well?

The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. (2Pet 3:9)

Maybe it will be today…

Let thy mercy, O LORD, be upon us, according as we hope in thee. (Ps 33:22)
