Summary Of What’s In This Weekly Wrap-Up
The focus of the last week was no doubt the Starting Five Defense Virtual Conference.
I have to admit that after having listened to the executives of the 10 attending companies on Monday and Tuesday, some pretty compelling investment opportunities are on the table. Once again, the 10 companies represented were:
- Blumetric Environmental Inc. (OTC:BLMWF) (BLM.V)
- C-com Satellite Systems Inc. (OTCQB:CYSNF) (CMI.V)
- Intermap Technologies Corp. (OTCQB:ITMSF) (IMP.TO)
- M-tron Industries, Inc. (NYSE:MPTI)
- Velo3d, Inc. (NASDAQ:VELO)
- Firan Technology Group Corporat (OTC:FTGFF) (FTG.TO)
- Ieh Corp. (OOTC:IEHC)
- B.o.s. Better Online Solutions (NASDAQ:BOSC)
- Haivision Sys Inc . (OOTC:HAIVF) (HAI.TO)
- Aluula Composites Inc (OOTC:AUUAF) (AUUA.V)
You can see all the presentations here.
We also had the following guest speakers, some of which offered some of their favorite pitches, which can be found here:
- Dan Kunze (@dgkunze1) – Private investor and defense tech strategist; discussed macro AI-infrastructure and dual-use defense investment themes.
- Kyle Adams (@KyleAdamsStocks) – Microcap investor and Substack writer; pitched M-tron Industries, Inc. (NYSE:MPTI)
- $MPTI, a defense RF component supplier with strong backlog and defense exposure.
- Robert Gignac (@smcap_thinking) – Forterra Investment Management founder; pitched $FTGFF (FTG.TO) (aerospace/defense electronics) and Velan Inc. (OOTC:VLNSF) (VLN.TO) (nuclear-valve manufacturer, takeover potential).
- Meredith Brill (@LockStockBarrl) – Family office investor and IP attorney; pitched Aluula Composites Inc (OOTC:AUUAF) (AUUA.V), maker of ultra-light recyclable high-performance fabrics.
Right off the bat, I want to say thanks for all who attended live.
At its peak, the conference attracted 76 attendees. Given that the event was only “marketed” for about a week, I thought this was a great turnout and are confident that the next one will yield an even better presence as people begin to see the value and information arbitrage that results from the presentations from handpicked companies and Q&A exchanges.
The format was a little different this time around. The MS Microcaps team decided to make sure that the companies had a chance to briefly present their decks to us, after which we would engage in host-led discussion after the fact. This slightly deviated from the longer, freestyle, fireside-themed events that are usually held. I have mixed thoughts on this move, but overall we were able to get some very useful insights during the Q&A portions.
We’ll be asking for your feedback on this, or you can reply directly to this post on your thoughts about the format we used.
I wasn’t sure what to expect from several of the companies invited to be at the conference, since some of them are new on my research pipeline list, even though I was aware of them for many years.
That’s part of the reason that the conference was designed to be more of a standard presentation-style delivery, rather than a fireside chat-style delivery. I’m still trying to learn about these companies, so it’s a good way for us to get started. And to be quite honest, I think I really enjoyed the approach of the companies giving short presentations, followed by a nice Q&A session afterwards. I also enjoyed the opportunity it opened for Nicholas Cortellucci (@NickCortellucci) from Atrium Research and me to trade the lead during the Q&A.
So, we broke these sections down into concise summaries for you to quickly glean what we wanted to know most about after their PowerPoints were complete.
Just FYI, a few of the comments are forward looking and unsolicited, so as usual we wanted to make sure that you do your own due diligence before making investment decisions.
Later in this update, will provide Q&A summaries of each company that represented at the conference along with links to the videos.
This week also brought a small slate of earnings and developments across some tracked names, such as Spok Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:SPOK) (wireless communications solutions), Emergent Biosolutions Inc. (NYSE:EBS) (biodefense & Narcan), Mueller (paul) Co. (OOTC:MUEL) (industrial equipment), Burnham Holdings, Inc. (OOTC:BURCA) (boiler manufacturing), Equator Beverage Company (OTCQB:MOJO) (beverages).
SPOK came in below expectations for Q3 but
